The Court of Appeals dismissed Quezon City Engineer Alfredo Macapugay from his official duty, being held liable for one of worst hotel fires in the country’s history. This is in support of the order of the same nature issued by the Office of the Ombudsman.
The decision by the Court of Appeals was issued on February 14, 2007, dismissing the appeal for review filed by Macapugay.
On the 12-page decision, the Court of Appeals ruled that the high number of fatalities can be directly traced to the building’s inadequate fire and safety procedures. Additionally, the fire may have been prevented if Macapugay was not remiss of his official duties.
