Dulaang UP Showcases “Basilia of Malolos”Posted by msese
    Feb 28, 2007 12:41 am

As opposed to the traditional ‘sarswela’, artistic director Jose Estrella of the Dulaang UP (University of the Philippines) will direct “Basilia of Malolos”.

The material is written by Nicanor Tiongson, and he actually considers it an anti-sarswela, with the usual elements of a hero and heroine, a villain and an interesting plot – but the difference lies in the subversive way that the story is interpreted, told and presented.

Tiongson based the play on the letter sent by Jose Rizal to a group of fearless and spirited women from Malolos, a town in Bulacan, in 1889. In the letter, Rizal congratulated them for having their petition approved for a night school to be opened during those strict times of the Spanish occupation.

Working with Estrella are Dexter Santos who will oversee choreography, John Abul and Ludendorffo Denceteceo are in charge of costume and set design, while light and video design will be handled by John Batalla and Mele Yamomo, respectively.

The play is scheduled to be shown at the UP Palma Hall, beginning March 4 inside the Winfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater.
